Aadhaar PAN Link Status Check Online: Verify & Fix in 2026
Someone invests regularly. SIPs running. Demat account is active. ITR filed every year without fail. One day they try to buy units in a new mutual fund and the transaction fails. They call their broker. The broker tells them their PAN is inoperative.
They had no idea.
Turned out their PAN and Aadhaar were never properly linked. Everything looked fine from the outside; the SIPs were running on autopilot, the demat showed their holdings, but underneath, the account had been flagged. TDS had been deducted at 20% instead of 10% for the last several months. New investments were being blocked. And because their PAN was inoperative, the ITR they had filed a few months ago was sitting in limbo.
Two minutes of checking would have caught this months earlier.
This guide exists so you are not that person. It covers everything from how to check your Aadhaar-PAN link status right now, what each result means, how to fix mismatches, and what an inoperative PAN is silently costing you every single month.
The Problem This Solved And Why It Matters
To understand why PAN-Aadhaar linking became mandatory, you have to understand the problem it was designed to fix.
For years, India had a duplicate PAN problem. It was surprisingly easy for a person to hold more than one PAN card. Two different PANs meant two different tax identities. Some people exploited this deliberately. Others ended up with duplicates through administrative errors. Either way, the result was a tax system full of gaps.
Aadhaar solved this because of one simple fact: every Indian resident has exactly one Aadhaar number, linked to their biometrics, fingerprints and iris scans. It cannot be duplicated. It cannot be faked at scale.
By mandating PAN-Aadhaar linking under Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, now reinforced under Section 262(6) of the Income Tax Act, 2025, the government created a system where every PAN maps to one unique, biometrically verified identity. If you have two PANs, the system catches it. If your tax records show one identity but your investments show another, the system catches that too.
The result in numbers: as of March 2024, 57.25 crore out of 70.24 crore PAN holders in India had linked their PAN with Aadhaar. Over 11.5 crore PAN cards had been deactivated.
If you are among those 11.5 crore or even slightly worried, the first thing to do is check your status.
How to Check Your Aadhaar-PAN Link Status Right Now
Method 1: Income Tax e-Filing Portal
Go to: https://eportal.incometax.gov.in
On the homepage, look for "Quick Links" on the left side. Click "Link Aadhaar Status." Enter your 10-digit PAN number and your 12-digit Aadhaar number. Click "View Link Aadhaar Status."
Your result appears immediately.
Method 2: SMS
If you are on your phone or prefer not to use a browser, this works just as well.
Send an SMS from your Aadhaar-registered mobile number to 567678 or 56161 in this format:
UIDPAN [12-digit Aadhaar] [10-digit PAN]
For example: UIDPAN 123456789012 ABCDE1234F
You will receive a reply within a few minutes confirming your link status.
Method 3: UTIITSL Portal
Visit https://www.utiitsl.com and navigate to PAN services. Use the PAN-Aadhaar Link Status option. Works as an alternative if the Income Tax portal is slow during peak periods like ITR filing season.
Understanding Your Result, What Each Status Actually Means
When you check, one of following four results will appear.
Result 1: Linked
This is the result you want to see. Your PAN and Aadhaar are successfully connected. Your PAN is fully operative. You can file ITR, invest, open bank accounts, apply for loans, and transact without restriction.
Result 2: Not Linked / PAN Inoperative
Your PAN is inoperative under Section 262(6) of the Income Tax Act, 2025. This is the most common result for people who have been putting off the linking process.
What does inoperative actually mean? It means your PAN currently cannot be used for tax filings, new investments, high-value banking transactions, or KYC processes. Your existing portfolio is safe, nobody is going to liquidate your holdings. But everything new is blocked, and TDS on your investment income is being charged at a higher rate.
The fix exists. It involves a ₹1,000 late fee and takes 7 to 30 days to fully resolve. The step-by-step process is in the next section.
Result 3: Linking in Progress
You have already submitted a link request and it is with UIDAI for validation. This is a completely normal transitional state. UIDAI typically confirms within 7 to 10 working days.
The most important thing to know here: do not submit another request. It will not speed up the process. It may actually create confusion in the system. Check back in a week.
Result 4: Linking Failed, Details Mismatch
UIDAI attempted to validate your PAN and Aadhaar combination and found a discrepancy between the two records. The link request has been rejected, not permanently, but until the discrepancy is corrected.
The most common causes: a name spelling difference between PAN and Aadhaar, a maiden name on one document versus a married name on the other, date of birth recorded in different formats, or a middle name present on one document and absent on the other.
This needs to be corrected before you can link. The mismatch fixing process is covered in detail below.
How to Link PAN with Aadhaar in 2026 — Complete Step by Step
Since the original deadline has passed for most users, linking now requires paying the late fee first.
Here is exactly how to do it.
Step 1: Pay the ₹1,000 Late Fee
Go to the Income Tax e-Filing Portal: https://eportal.incometax.gov.in
Click "Link Aadhaar" under Quick Links. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number and click "Continue to Pay Through e-Pay Tax." Complete OTP verification on your registered mobile.
-
On the e-Pay Tax page, select Assessment Year 2026-27.
-
Under payment type, choose "Other Receipts (500)."
-
Select "Fee for delay in linking PAN with Aadhaar."
The ₹1,000 amount will be pre-filled automatically. -
Choose your preferred payment method — net banking, debit card, or UPI.
-
Complete the payment and save the receipt. You will need it.
Step 2: Wait 4-5 Working Days
This step trips up a lot of people. After paying, you cannot immediately submit the link request. The payment needs time to reflect in the Income Tax system. If you try to link too early, the portal may show an error saying your payment cannot be verified.
Wait 4-5 working days, then proceed to Step 3.
Step 3: Submit the Link Request
Return to https://eportal.incometax.gov.in. Click "Link Aadhaar" under Quick Links. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar.
-
When the portal shows "Your payment details are verified," click Continue.
-
Fill in the required details.
-
Click "Link Aadhaar."
-
Enter the 6-digit OTP sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number.
-
Click Validate.
Your link request has now been submitted to UIDAI for validation.
Step 4: Wait for UIDAI Validation
UIDAI typically validates the request within 7 to 10 working days. Your PAN generally becomes operative again within 7 to 30 days after successful validation.
Track your progress using any of the three status check methods described earlier in this guide.
What To Do If There Is a Name or Date of Birth Mismatch
A mismatch is frustrating, but it is almost always fixable. Here is what causes it and how to resolve it.
Common causes of mismatch:
-
Maiden name on PAN versus married name on Aadhaar (or vice versa).
-
An abbreviated name on one document and a full name on the other — "R. Sharma" on PAN versus "Rahul Sharma" on Aadhaar.
-
Date of birth recorded in DD/MM/YYYY format on one document and MM/DD/YYYY on the other.
-
Middle name present on PAN and absent from Aadhaar, or vice versa.
-
Spelling variations that crept in during manual data entry decades ago.
To fix your PAN details:
Visit NSDL at https://www.onlineservices.nsdl.com or UTIITSL at https://www.utiitsl.com. Submit a PAN correction request using Form 49A (for Indian citizens). Upload supporting documents — your Aadhaar, birth certificate, or any valid identity document that shows the correct details. Pay the correction fee. Your corrected PAN is typically issued within 15 working days.
To fix your Aadhaar details:
For minor corrections like name spelling, this can be done online at https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in. You will need your Aadhaar-registered mobile number for OTP verification.
For major corrections like date of birth or significant name changes, visit your nearest Aadhaar Enrolment Centre with original supporting documents. To find the nearest centre and book an appointment: https://appointments.uidai.gov.in
Once the correction is done on either document, attempt the PAN-Aadhaar linking process again from the beginning.
The Real Cost of an Inoperative PAN
An inoperative PAN is not just a compliance issue that exists somewhere in the background. It is actively affecting your money, right now, in ways that are easy to miss.
TDS at 20% instead of 10%, every quarter
Under Section 206AA of the Income Tax Act, TDS is charged at 20% on investment income for anyone with an inoperative PAN instead of the standard 10%.
On a fixed deposit generating ₹1 lakh in interest income, the standard TDS is ₹10,000. With an inoperative PAN, you are paying ₹20,000. That is ₹10,000 extra, deducted before the money even reaches you.
On dividend income of ₹50,000 from equity holdings, the extra TDS is ₹5,000. On a bond coupon payment of ₹30,000, it is ₹3,000 extra.
Multiply this across every investment, every quarter, for however long your PAN remains inoperative
and the number starts to become significant.
You will get it back eventually by claiming it in your ITR against your actual tax liability, but only after your PAN becomes operative and only after the ITR is processed. In the meantime, that money is locked up.
Demat account suspended
If your PAN is inoperative, your depository participant is legally required to suspend your demat account. CDSL and stock exchanges will not accept buy or sell orders from a suspended account.
Your existing investments remain in your account, no one is touching them. But you cannot trade. You cannot rebalance. You cannot add new positions or exit existing ones. For an active investor, this is a serious problem.
The moment your PAN becomes operative again, the suspension lifts.
ITR cannot be filed and the consequences cascade
The Income Tax e-filing portal does not accept ITR submissions from inoperative PAN holders.
This means you cannot claim refunds for excess TDS. You cannot carry forward capital losses to set off against future gains. You risk late filing penalties if the linking and reactivation process is not completed before the ITR deadline.
For F&O traders and investors with capital gains, this is particularly consequential. Missing the deadline to carry forward losses can cost you far more than the ₹1,000 linking fee.

Forms 15G and 15H become invalid
If you had submitted Form 15G or 15H to declare that your income is below the taxable threshold and prevent TDS deduction on interest income, those declarations become void the moment your PAN becomes inoperative.
TDS gets deducted at 20% regardless of the declaration you submitted. The declaration is meaningless with an inoperative PAN.
Mutual fund and banking transactions fail
New SIP registrations, lump sum purchase requests, high-value banking transactions, loan applications, and credit card applications all require a valid, operative PAN. With an inoperative PAN, these transactions either fail outright or get flagged for additional compliance checks that can take weeks to resolve.
Your demat account and stock market trading
PAN is the foundation of your demat account and your entire trading identity in the Indian markets. SEBI requires all securities market participants to be KYC-compliant, and PAN is a mandatory part of that process. A suspended demat means blocked trades and blocked trades at the wrong moment can be costly.
If you have been thinking about opening a demat account and are not sure why PAN is so central to the process: [Why PAN Card is Mandatory for Demat Accounts, Mutual Funds and Stock Market Investing]
Your KYC status across all investments
From April 2026, SEBI mandated that all investor KYC must be validated using Aadhaar and PAN authentication. If you completed KYC in previous years using utility bills or bank statements as address proof, your KYC status has now been downgraded from "KYC Validated" to "KYC Registered."
KYC Registered status blocks new investments with new fund houses, even if your PAN is operative. And if your PAN is inoperative, KYC cannot be upgraded to Validated status at all.
The fix is sequential. Link PAN to Aadhaar first. Wait for reactivation. Then revalidate KYC through CAMS, KFintech, CVL, or NSE KRA.

How Aadhaar Powers Everything.
Aadhaar is the backbone of almost every financial service in India. It enables paperless eKYC for bank account opening, demat accounts, mutual funds, and insurance. It powers OTP-based ITR e-verification eliminating the need to send physical signed copies to CPC Bengaluru. It enables the instant e-PAN service, which lets you get a PAN card for free in minutes using nothing but your Aadhaar and registered mobile number.
When your Aadhaar is updated, linked to your current mobile number, and connected to your PAN,
every financial transaction in India becomes faster, simpler, and less paperwork-heavy.

Who Is Exempt From PAN-Aadhaar Linking?
The following categories are exempt under CBDT notifications:
Non-resident Indians who do not have Indian residential status. Individuals who are 80 years of age or older. Residents of Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and Meghalaya. Non-citizens of India.
One important update for 2026: from April 1, 2026, new PAN applications automatically require Aadhaar for issuance. New PAN cards are now issued with PAN-Aadhaar linking built in. This problem primarily affects existing PAN holders who applied before this date.
New to Investing? Here Is What You Need to Know First
If you are reading this because you are just getting started with investing and trying to understand the basics, the PAN card is the most important document you need to sort out before anything else.
Without a PAN card, you cannot open a demat account, start a SIP, buy stocks, apply for an IPO, trade derivatives, or conduct high-value financial transactions.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is it too late to link PAN with Aadhaar?
No. You can link at any time by paying the ₹1,000 late fee under Section 430 of the Income Tax Act, 2025. The consequences- inoperative PAN, higher TDS, blocked transactions continue until you link.
2. My mobile number has changed and is no longer linked to Aadhaar. What do I do?
You cannot complete the OTP-based online linking process without a mobile number registered to Aadhaar. You must first update your mobile number at the nearest Aadhaar Enrolment Centre. Book an appointment at https://appointments.uidai.gov.in. Once the mobile update is done, you can complete the online linking process.
3. Can I file my ITR with an inoperative PAN?
No. The Income Tax e-filing portal does not accept ITR submissions from inoperative PAN holders. If the ITR deadline is approaching, prioritise linking immediately. Even if you cannot complete the full reactivation before the deadline, having the link request submitted demonstrates compliance intent, but formally, an inoperative PAN blocks the submission.
4. What happens to the extra TDS already deducted at 20%?
Once your PAN becomes operative, the TDS deducted at the higher 20% rate reflects in your Form 26AS. You can claim the excess against your actual tax liability in your ITR and receive a refund of the difference. However, refunds are only processed after your PAN is operative and the ITR is filed.
5. Does PAN-Aadhaar linking affect NRIs?
NRIs are generally exempt from the linking requirement. However, if an NRI holds a residential PAN (issued when they were a resident) rather than an NRI-specific PAN, linking may be required. The rules around NRI PAN status are nuanced; consult a qualified tax professional for advice specific to your situation.
6. What if my Aadhaar is linked to a different PAN?
Your Aadhaar linked to another PAN in the system cannot be fixed online. You will need to contact your Jurisdictional Assessing Officer at the Income Tax Department to request de-linking. To find your AO's contact details, visit the Income Tax e-filing portal and use the "Know Your AO" feature.
7. Does linking affect my existing mutual fund folios or demat holdings?
No. Linking does not alter, affect, or transfer any of your existing investments in any way. It simply restores your PAN to operative status, which in turn removes restrictions on new transactions.
