how Aadhaar is used across banking, mutual funds, demat accounts, and income tax filing in India

From opening a bank account to filing your ITR — see how Aadhaar powers India's financial ecosystem.

Most people think Aadhaar is just a government ID.

It is actually the backbone of almost every financial service you use in India today, from opening a bank account to filing your taxes to starting a SIP.

Here is exactly how Aadhaar works across each financial service.

Aadhaar in Banking

Opening a bank account used to mean visiting a branch with a stack of documents. Aadhaar changed that completely.

Today, Aadhaar-based eKYC lets you open a savings account, apply for a loan, or get a credit card entirely online. You provide your 12-digit Aadhaar number, enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile, and UIDAI shares your name, address, and photo directly with the bank, no physical documents needed.

The entire process takes under 20 minutes. For millions of Indians in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, this was the first time a bank account became genuinely accessible.

Aadhaar for Mutual Funds and SIPs

To invest in mutual funds, you must complete KYC. Aadhaar makes this entirely paperless.

Visit any SEBI-registered KRA portal, such as CAMS, KFintech, or CVL. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar. Authenticate via OTP. Your details are fetched directly from UIDAI. KYC done.

eKYC via OTP allows investments up to ₹50,000 per fund house per year. For higher amounts, biometric verification or Video KYC is required.

Once KYC is completed using Aadhaar, your record is stored centrally through CKYC, so you do not need to redo KYC with each new fund house or broker.

Aadhaar for Demat Accounts

Opening a demat account requires KYC verification. Aadhaar-based eKYC is the fastest way to complete this.

Your identity, address, and photograph are verified instantly through UIDAI authentication. Most brokers, including Bigul, complete the entire demat account opening process online using Aadhaar OTP, without any physical paperwork.

Aadhaar for Income Tax Filing

Aadhaar plays two critical roles in tax filing.

First: PAN-Aadhaar linking is mandatory. If your PAN is not linked to Aadhaar, it becomes inoperative and you cannot file your ITR online.

Second: Aadhaar OTP is used to e-verify your ITR after filing. Instead of sending a physical signed copy to CPC Bengaluru, you simply enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile. ITR verified instantly.

You can also use Aadhaar to get an instant e-PAN completely free through the Income Tax portal if you do not have a PAN card yet.

Is Your Aadhaar Data Safe?

A common concern and a fair one.

UIDAI only shares basic KYC details: name, address, photo when you give explicit consent via OTP or biometric. No bank account details, no investment records, no financial history is ever shared with UIDAI. All data travels through encrypted channels under strict RBI and UIDAI guidelines.
