Indian automobile market has observed a mixed performance in the Month of March 2025. Many manufacturers observed a growth while many faced challenges. Rising costs, price hikes and changing preferences have influenced sales dynamics around the globe.

Indian automobile market has seen a steady growth as Tata Motors sold 51616 units in March 2025. It was a rise of 3.01% year on year increase from 50,110 units in March 2024. Looking at the month-over-month growth, the sales rose by 11.15% from 46437 units in February 2025.

Despite this growth, Tata Motors' electric vehicle sales saw a decline of over 20.56%.

There were only 5353 units sold in electric vehicles, which was less than 6738 units sold in March 2024. However, Tata Motors maintained its third position in the Indian automobile sector and recorded a 36.9% increase in exports, shipping 256 units.

As the automobile industry evolves, Tata Motors continues to adapt to shifting consumer demands and market trends.

Mahindra's Strong SUV Sales and Export Growth

Mahindra company sold over 48,048 SUVs in March 2025 while making an impressive year-on-year(YoY) growth compared to March 2024.

Mahindra sold 48,048 SUVs in March 2025, marking an impressive year-on-year (YoY) growth of 18% compared to March 2024. However, there was a month-over-month (MoM) decline of 4.7% from February's sales of 50,420 units.

  • Mahindra's automobile saw a rise of 163% while observing a strong international demand.

  • The company achieved substantial automobile market success through its line of SUV vehicles and electric models including BE6 and XEV9e.

Maruti Suzuki Maintains Leadership in the Automobile Market

Maruti Suzuki, the market leader, sold 1,60,016 units in March 2025. However, this represented a slight YoY decline of 0.8% compared to March 2024's figure of 1,61,304 units and a marginal MoM drop of 0.48% from February's sales of 1,60,791 units.

  • Maruti Suzuki's utility vehicle (UV) segment recorded growth, with sales increasing to 61,097 units, up from last year's 58,436 units.

  • The company maintains its Indian automobile industry lead by using fuel-efficient models and maintaining a powerful dealership network.

Hyundai Sees Growth in Exports and Overall Sales

The March 2025 total sales numbers from Hyundai reached 67320 units with an annual growth rate of 2.6% as compared to the previous March data of 65601 units. Sales of Monthly Volumes grew by 8.58 percent from their February figure of 62,003 units.

  • Domestic sales stood at 51,820 units, experiencing a slight YoY decline of -2.23 %.

  • Hyundai's automobile exports surged by 23%, reaching 15,500 units and strengthening its global footprint.

Toyota's Automobile Sales Show Consistent Growth

Toyota reported a strong performance, selling approximately 27,000 units in March 2025, reflecting a YoY growth of over 13%.

  • MoM sales also increased by 2.22% from February's 26,414 units.

  • Toyota's SUVs and multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) continue to see high demand, contributing to its automobile market success.

Other Manufacturers

  • Kia: Kia India sold a total of 25,525 units in March—a YoY growth of 19.3% from last year's figure of 21,400 and an MoM increase of 1.99% from February's sales of 25,026.

  • Skoda: Skoda registered its highest-ever monthly sales with significant YoY growth.

  • Honda: Honda saw a continued decline in sales due to limited new launches.

  • MG Motor and Renault: Both brands faced challenges with declining volumes.

Conclusion

Some auto brands experienced increased sales in March because their SUV sector performed well while their export volumes grew strongly. The Honda faced difficulties because of rising production costs during that time period while consumer attitudes remained subdued.
