NHPC CMD KM Singh hopeful of resumption of work of stalled 2000 MW Lower Subansiri hydro power project
GUWAHATI: State run public sector utility, NHPC Limited's chairman & Managing director, K.M Singh is hopeful that stalled 2000 MW Lower Subansiri hydro power project along Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border will resume. Lower Subansari project had snowballed into political issue during the 2014 Lok Sabha election. BJP and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) had opposed the construction of big dam in the region while congress was for it. Singh who was in Guwahati on Saturday met Assam chief minister, Sarbananda Sonowal. Singh said that whatever concerns that has been raised by different groups it has been addressed and mitigated."Assam will benefit from the project as flood can be regulated." Work at the project site came to halt since 2010 following protest of anti dam groups. "NHPC has taken into account all safety parameters. We are well aware of the fact Northeast India is seismic zone V. NHPC's has facility of monitoring all seismic activity on real time basis," Singh added. Around 60 percent of the work of the power project is almost completed. Construction at the project site started in 2005 and the project was slated to start operating 2014. Singh said that in Lower Subansari the funding pattern was 30 percent equity and 70 percent debt. The initial cost of the project was Rs 6,285.33 crore however now it has increased three times. NHPC has invested close to Rs 8000 Crore. The revised cost estimate of the project is Rs 17,000 Crore.
