Another setback for Adani in the Carmichael mine project

Adani's controversial Carmichael mining project, already beset by protests and criticisms, is now seeing funding trouble. The Adani Group cancelled a Aus$ 2 bn contract with a mining services firm, due to its failure to raise funds. The Queensland government has already vetoed a Aus$ 900 million loan to Adani, and the Group had then looked to China for funding. Chinese investors however, have also failed to come through on loans, placing a question mark on the project. The Adani Group insists that it is still focused on seeing the Aus$16.5 billion project through, and the Adani board had approved the project in June. But the public anger in Queensland against the mine has impacted political support in Australia for the project as well. The newly elected Queensland government came to power while making promises to veto the low cost loan to Adani, and after the new Premier implemented the veto she also tweeted a photo of her letter, saying that she had fulfilled a major poll promise she had made during the election campaign to put a stop to the loan.

The opposition this time is from the Premier of Queensland who has used her veto power against funding the company's rail line project. The project has also attracted more ire from the green lobby, with it being listed as number five in the 'dirty dozen' list of global projects that put the goal of keeping global warming under control at risk. An email query sent to Adani Group remained unanswered. "As I committed during the election campaign, I have today written to the Prime Minister exercising Queensland's veto over any NAIF funding for the Adani rail line," said Annastacia Palaszczuk, premier of Queensland in a tweet on Tuesday. NAIF is Northern Australia Infrastructure Fund. Palaszczuk was re-elected as the premier of Queensland this month. In a press statement issued in March this year, Adani Group quoted Annastacia Palaszczuk, Premier of Queensland, Australia to have reaffirmed Queensland ..
