May 2025 GST Collections Surge 16.4% YoY Led by Strong Revenues

GST collection in May  2025 observed a significant rise. The growth in the GST showcased a strong stride in India's economic development. The trend showcases strong growth in domestic and import revenue. The overall GST collection for the month of May 2025 has surged to Rs 2.01 Lakh crore, highlighting an increase of 16.4% YoY.

Analysis of May GST Numbers 

GST Collection of May 2025 is slightly less compared to the previous month. Let’s understand the data of GST collection by the Central, state and others.

  • Central GST: Rs 35,434 Crore 

  • State GST: Rs 43,902 Crore

  • Integrated GST: Rs 1,08,836 Crore 

  • GST cess: Rs 12,879 crore

The net GST collection of May 2025, after giving the refunds, is Rs 1.73 lakh crore, which showed a decline of 17.2% as compared to the previous month. The given numbers highlight an increasing trend in the Indian economy and showcase an increasing strength of India’s tax system

GST Collection Trends Across States and UTs

The overall GST collections among the states have showcased a divergence trend across Indian states and Union Territories. The main contributors in GST this month were  Maharashtra, Rs 31,530 Cr, which grew 17% YoY. Meanwhile, Karnataka and Gujarat were the next biggest contributors to the GST growth.

Trends diverged across states and Union Territories: major contributors included Maharashtra (Rs 26,854 crore → Rs 31,530 crore; 17 % growth), Tamil Nadu (Rs 9,768 crore → Rs 12,230 crore; 25 % growth), and Karnataka (Rs 11,889 crore → Rs 14,299 crore; 20 % growth), while Andhra Pradesh dipped 2 % (Rs 3,890 crore → Rs 3,803 crore). 

Among smaller regions, Lakshadweep surged 445 % (Rs 1 crore → Rs 7 crore), Arunachal Pradesh 53 % (Rs 98 crore → Rs 151 crore), and Meghalaya 23 % (Rs 172 crore → Rs 212 crore). Conversely, Mizoram fell 26 % (Rs 39 crore → Rs 29 crore), Uttarakhand declined 13 % (Rs 1,837 crore → Rs 1,605 crore), and Dadra and Nagar Haveli decreased 6 % (Rs 375 crore → Rs 351 crore), underscoring pronounced regional disparities in revenue performance.

May FY26 GST Growth: Domestic and Customs Revenues Climb

In May 2025, India’s net GST collections showed robust growth across all major components, driven by strong domestic demand and heightened import duties. Domestic net revenue climbed from Rs 1,19,872 crore to Rs 1,31,471 crore—a 9.7 % increase—driven by CGST rising to Rs 31,191 crore (from Rs 29,233 crore), SGST to Rs 38,511 crore (from Rs 36,197 crore), IGST to Rs 50,401 crore (from Rs 43,543 crore), and CESS to Rs 11,368 crore (from Rs 10,898 crore) . 

Customs-derived GST revenue also surged, with net customs collections up 72.9 % to Rs 42,370 crore (from Rs 24,510 crore) . Overall, total net GST receipts expanded by 20.4 %—from Rs 1,44,381 crore to Rs 1,73,841 crore—reflecting vigorous economic activity and strong compliance efforts.
