India’s passenger vehicle (PV) market recorded highs in September 2025, affected by festive buying and the GST 2.0 reforms. Maruti Suzuki was the lead, but the spotlight shifted to Tata Motors with its best-ever monthly sales, while Mahindra was in third place on the back of high demand. Hyundai, despite record SUV contributions, lost further ground and slipped to fourth.

Maruti Suzuki Auto Sales September 2025
Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) remained the leader in September 2025 with 189,665 units of sales. But its passenger vehicle sales in the country fell to 132,820 units from 144,962 of last year, reflecting ongoing stress in entry segment and utility vehicles. Baleno and Swift maintained stability in compact car segment with 66,882 units, providing some respite. What really stood out was Maruti’s export performance — a record 42,204 units, which helped balance the domestic slowdown. Adding to the momentum, festive deliveries crossed 1.65 lakh units during Navratri’s first week, giving the company a strong platform as it heads into October.
Tata Motors Auto Sales September 2025
Tata Motors registered sales of 96,769 units in September 2025, a sharp rise from 71,345 units last year, reflecting a strong 35.6% growth. Tata Motors cemented its second-place spot with 59,667 PVs sold domestically, its best-ever monthly tally — a staggering 47% YoY growth. The Nexon compact SUV crossed 22,500 units, setting a new benchmark for a single Tata model. EV sales nearly doubled to 9,191 units, while the Harrier and Safari achieved their highest-ever combined sales. Strong festive momentum and aggressive EV penetration positioned Tata as one of the biggest winners of September 2025.
Mahindra & Mahindra Auto Sales September 2025
Mahindra & Mahindra sold 1,00,298 units in September 2025, compared to 86,464 units a year ago, achieving a solid 16% growth. Mahindra retained the third spot with 56,233 domestic SUV sales, clocking 10% YoY growth. Its SUV-centric lineup — including the Scorpio-N, XUV700, and Thar — drove retail demand, which surged 60% during the first nine days of Navratri. Despite logistical challenges constraining late-September dispatches, Mahindra’s robust SUV momentum kept it ahead of Hyundai and reinforced its growing dominance in the segment.
Hyundai Auto Sales September 2025
Hyundai Motor India clocked sales of 70,347 units in September 2025, up from 64,201 units last year, registering a 9.6% growth. Hyundai Motor India fell to fourth place with 51,547 domestic PV sales, down 4.18% YoY. SUVs contributed a record 72.4% of sales (37,313 units), led by the Creta’s all-time high of 18,861 units. Even the Venue rebounded with 11,484 units, its best in 20 months. However, Hyundai’s reliance on SUVs could not offset the ongoing weakness in hatchbacks and compact cars.
Bottom Line
Maruti was able to maintain its lead, though its domestic slowdown made the top position less convincing even with record exports. Tata jumped into a strong second with its highest-ever monthly sales, with the increasing gravity of EVs behind it. Mahindra's SUV-biased range kept it in third position again, demonstrating once more where demand actually is. Hyundai, on the other hand, slipped to fourth — a sign that depending too much on SUVs can backfire when the market is evolving so quickly. The festive push and GST 2.0 tailwinds have reset the battleground, with Tata and Mahindra now challenging Hyundai’s long-standing dominance in the mid-tier positions.
