Auto Sales April 2025: TATA Motors, Mahindra, Hyundai & Toyota

The Indian automobile market saw contrasting growth patterns in April 2025. The automobile sector displayed divergent results as manufacturers handled growth differently from one another. Both geopolitical tensions, price increase patterns and evolving consumer tastes influenced global market sales in April 2025.

The Indian automobile market observed a slight decline in April 2025. Tata Motors sold 45919 vehicles domestically. It was a decrease of 6% year on year, while a slight decrease month to month from March 2025. Looking at the month-over-month growth in the overall automobile sales, there was a slight increase.

In April 2025, Tata Motors observed a decline across its segments. Domestic passenger vehicle sales fell 6% Y-o-Y to 45,199 units, while total PV volumes including exports slipped 5% to 45,532 units. Electric vehicle sales contracted 16% Y-o-Y to 5,318 units, highlighting mounting market challenges. Commercial vehicle volumes also declined, with total CV sales down 8% to 27,221 units and domestic CV sales off 10% at 25,764 units. The small commercial vehicle and pickup segment steeply plunged 23% Y-o-Y.

As the Indian automobile industry continues to grow, Tata Motors has continued to adapt to the shifting consumer demands.

Mahindra's Strong SUV Sales and Export Growth

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) observed a strong continued growth, which was driven by its Utility Vehicles. The overall domestic UV sales have surged to 28% Year on Year to 52330 units. The total automotive volume of the company, including commercial and export, has climbed by 19% Y-o-Y and has reached 84,170 units. M&M has clinched the 2nd position in the overall domestic passenger vehicle sales. It has surpassed Tata and Hyundai and has reinforced its identity as an SUV specialist.

  • Domestic UV sales of Mahindra reached 52,330 units, which is up by 28% Y-o-Y.

  • Total auto sales rose 19% Y-o-Y to 84,170 units, securing the 2nd domestic PV dispatch ranking.

Maruti Suzuki Maintains Leadership in the Automobile Market

Maruti Suzuki held the leadership position in April 2025. The company has sold 179791 vehicles, including domestic and exports. The domestic passenger vehicle volumes were broadly flat at 138,704 units, which increased by 0.5% Year on Year. 

The gains were in the compact segment (Baleno, Swift) and the UV segment lines. Meanwhile, the mini segment of the Maruti saw a dip, which counterbalanced the growth

  • Exports and OEM supply climbed sharply, driving a 7% increase in total sales.

Hyundai Slipped In Domestic Rankings Despite Growth

Hyundai Motor India saw total sales climb 23% Y-o-Y to 60,774 units. The growth was fueled by exports, but domestic PV dispatches fell 8.9% Y-o-Y to 44,374 units. It dragged it to fourth place behind Maruti, M&M, and Tata. The brand reported a 5,601-unit drop compared with April 2024, attributing the slump to macroeconomic headwinds.

  • Overall sales grew 23% Y-o-Y to 60,774 units, driven by robust export performance.

Toyota's Automobile Sales Sees Consistent Growth

Toyota has observed a strong performance year on year, selling approximately 27324 units in the month of April 2025. It has reflected a year-on-year growth of over 15.7%, reflecting a strong momentum.

  • The company’s MoM sales increased by 1.22% from March 27000 units.

  • Toyota's SUVS and multi-purpose vehicles (MPVS) observe a strong demand, showcasing a strong growth in company success.

Other Manufacturers

  • Kia India maintained its upward momentum in April 2025, registering domestic sales of 23,623 units, marking an impressive 18.3% year-on-year growth compared to 19,968 units sold in April 2024

  • MG Motor India sold 5,829 units in April 2025, as the brand continued to establish its presence in the Indian market.

  • Honda is experiencing "continued decline in sales due to limited new launches," and it appears this trend may have persisted into April 2025. 

Conclusion

Various auto brands have experienced a slump in overall sales, while many saw a slight increase. The continued geopolitical tensions and rising production costs have changed consumer preferences. Meanwhile, various companies saw a growth in the overall export volume.
