BSE Market Cap Hits Rs 400 Lakh Crore Mark; Sensex and Nifty at All-Time High

The combined market-cap of all the listed stocks in Bombay Stock Exchange reached Rs 400 lakh crore for the first time.

India’s oldest stock exchange, BSE, hit a market capitalization of Rs 400 lakh crore on Monday, 8 April 2024. Recently, the Nifty50 and Sensex indices touched all-time highs of 22,768 and 75,123, respectively. 

The combined market-cap of all the listed stocks in Bombay Stock Exchange reached Rs 400 lakh crore for the first time. It shows that investors' sentiment is super bullish. 

Retail investors are shifting their savings from traditional investments to equity for better returns, which has surged domestic money flow. Moreover, mutual fund investment products are also getting a huge response from retail investors. Eventually, fund managers are investing more in equities, positively impacting the Indian markets.

BSE Market Cap Past Performance

On July 5, 2023, BSE market cap touched Rs 300 crore, when sensex was at 65,500. Market cap increased by 100 lakh crore in just 9 months.

Previously, India’s market cap crossed Rs 50 lakh crore in 2007, Rs 100 lakh crore milestone in 2014 and achieved Rs 200 lakh crore market cap in 2021.

In terms of wealth creation, the recent ongoing bull run is massive, and is led by mid and small-caps. In the last one year PSU stocks had been the biggest outperformers and beaten the returns of benchmark indices. 

Nifty PSE index and Nifty CPSE Returns Doubled

The Nifty PSE index and Nifty CPSE index returns have more than doubled in 12 months, and PSU banks have also gained 95% in a short span of time. The Nifty Microcap250 index has rallied 93%, the Nifty Smallcap100 has increased 80%, and the Nifty Midcap100 has increased 66%. 

The Indian stock market has witnessed a huge participation from the domestic retail savers. The demat account surging to 151 million in March 2024 from 36 Million in March 2019. The cumulative domestic equity inflows over the last five years amounted to $92.7 billion.
