In the shade: Bajaj Auto has a disappointing June quarter, impacted by GST and new emission norms

Bajaj Auto reported disappointing results, with a 19.51% decline YoY in consolidated net profit for the June quarter. Total income from company operations also fell from Rs. 6355.84 in the June quarter last year to Rs. 6,177.66 crore this quarter. The reasons Bajaj Auto cited included the GST transition, which had many customers postponing purchases. Some old stock held by dealers during the shift to GST resulted in loss on sale per motorcycle of around Rs. 1,400. The company said it has provisioned for Rs. 32 crore in compensation to the dealers. The company was also hit by the Supreme Court directed move to BS IV vehicles from BS III, which resulted in dead stock. Total vehicles sales during the quarter declined 10.68 per cent to 8,88,434 units from 9,94,733 units. The firm's total exports rose by 10.48% to 4,09,525 units. Bajaj exported some BS III vehicles to markets which still allowed their sale.
