NEW DELHI: The month of September usually belongs to the bulls, going by the historical data of the past 14 years; but it could be different this time around, experts suggest. Seasonality analysis since 2002 indicates that we are moving towards the strongest cyclical month i.e. September. Historically September and December have always given positive returns in more than 10 years. In last 14 years, Nifty50 has on an average has given an absolute return of 4 per cent in September. It clocked an absolute return of 12 per cent during the month in 2007, followed by 11.6 per cent in 2010 and 9 per cent in 2009. "The Nifty50 has witnessed a consistent sequential trend so far with studies indicating an extended upward move. The odds are again in favour of the seasonal effect," Motilal Oswal said in a report. The Nifty50 gave a negative return in September in only four out of last 14 years. It slipped 10 per cent in the year 2008, 4.7 per cent in 2002, 1.15 per cent in the year 2011 and 0.28 per cent in 2015. The trend still looks to be on the upside as long as the important support levels are not violated, but analysts still want to throw in a word of caution. Big variations in returns also makes some analysts circumspect about how September will pan out this time around.
