Mapping the market: Big rally fizzles out, market slows as investors get cold feet

NEW DELHI: The domestic equity market is moving more in sync with European markets these days than its Asian peers. Wait a bit! It's just a conjecture. The Japanese market is charting its way, with policymakers trying out ways and means to restrict a rally in the yen, which is already up 11 per cent against the dollar this year. Macro data from China has started showing consistency of late. But nobody knows what's up next. Often economic data points are as good as Chinese goods. Investors in India seem to have adopted a wait-and-watch policy. They wait for European markets to open first and then take the lead. Tuesday threw up no surprises. Unsure of what to make out of the data on the Chinese consumer and producer price indices, the domestic market kept moving sideways in the morning session, before notching up some smart gains towards the end. Here's a wrapup of key actions from across stocks and sectors that hogged limelight on Dalal Street on Wednesday: Equity investors wealth rose by Rs 6,546 crore: After wiping out all the losses of the previous week in Monday's rally, investor wealth as measured by BSE market capitalisation climbed by...

Mahindra & Mahindra drives past Tata Motors in race for mini-trucks sales

MUMBAI: Mahindra & Mahindra has turned the tables on Tata Motors, the nation's largest commercial vehicle maker, in the market for mini trucks, or small commercial vehicles. From being a strong challenger a few years ago, Mahindra has not only overtaken Tata Motors as the largest small commercial vehicle maker, but also extended the lead to 15% in the load or cargo carrying truck segment Mahindra has a 52% market share here, compared with 37% for Tata Motors. If the passenger carrying versions of pickups are included, Mahindra's share is 49% compared with Tata Motors' 41%. Tata Motors, which is being credited for creating a mini truck space over a decade back with the Ace, is being challenged on all fronts. The company has seen a whopping 22% fall in market share in the past four years in its bread-and-butter minitruck space. The small commercial vehicle segment has been struggling for three years, with slow industrial activity and financiers withdrawing from the segment hurting sales. The overall small commercial vehicle market has shrunk to 3.34 lakh units in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2016 from 5.6 lakh units three years prior. In this sliding market, the fortunes of Tata...
