Reliance Industries Limited, led by billionaire Mukesh Amban, joins hands with American chipmaker Nvidia. The partnership is being done to boost India’s artificial intelligence and semiconductor chip ambitions. In addition to these objectives, the partnership is set to contribute to the creation of a locally developed foundational large language model. This model will be specifically designed to encompass the diverse languages spoken in the nation and will be tailored for the development of generative AI applications.

Nvidia’s Pledge to Elevate India’s AI Ecosystem

Nvidia, renowned for its cutting-edge semiconductor technology, has committed to establishing AI computing data centres in India. Under the stewardship of Reliance’s subsidiary, Jio, these data centers are poised to surpass the computational power of India’s fastest existing supercomputers.

Access to Leading-Edge AI Technology

As part of the partnership, Reliance will gain access to Nvidia’s state-of-the-art GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip and the DGX Cloud, an AI supercomputing service hosted in the cloud. This infusion of advanced technology will empower Reliance to develop a wide array of AI applications and services tailored not only to its vast customer base of 450 million Jio users but also to support India’s thriving scientific community, developers, and startup ecosystem.

Unveiling AI-Ready Computing Data Centers

The collaborative effort will culminate in the establishment of AI-ready computing data centers, with plans to scale their capacity to a staggering 2,000 MW. This ambitious expansion project is expected to propel India to the forefront of AI infrastructure on the global stage.

Jensen Huang’s Enthusiasm for the Collaboration

Nvidia’s founder and CEO, Jensen Huang, expressed his excitement about this transformative partnership, stating, “We are thrilled to partner with Reliance to build state-of-the-art AI supercomputers in India. With India’s scale, data resources, and talent pool, Reliance can pave the way for indigenous large language models and foster the development of generative AI applications tailored to the Indian market.”

India’s Ascent in the AI Realm

Despite its massive population, India has yet to establish a significant foothold in the AI industry. Local startups and corporations have predominantly relied on existing large language models created by international organizations. The Reliance-Nvidia collaboration is poised to change this narrative, positioning India to chart its path in AI innovation.

Mukesh Ambani’s Vision for Technological Growth

Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries, underscored the transformative potential of this partnership, likening the Nvidia-powered computing and technology centers to the catalytic role played by Jio in advancing India’s digital landscape. Ambani expressed his enthusiasm for this venture, foreseeing it as a meaningful journey toward India’s technological growth and development.

As India embraces this pivotal partnership between Reliance Industries and Nvidia, the nation stands on the brink of a new era in technology, poised to unlock the full potential of artificial intelligence and emerge as a global leader in AI innovation.
