India's Gold Loan Boom: How Rising Gold Prices Are Unlocking the Financial Value of Household Jewellery in 2026.

Think about the last time you opened your bank locker.
Maybe it was a wedding, a festival or an occasion you don’t even remember.

That necklace sitting inside, the one that came from your mother, who got it from her mother and has probably not moved in years.

But something about it has changed. Its value.

Domestic gold prices in 2026 are approximately 60% higher than a year ago. That necklace worth ₹2 lakh in 2024 is worth ₹3.2 lakh today. The gold has not changed. The weight has not changed. The financial power sitting behind it has gone up 60%.

And every bank, NBFC, and fintech in India has noticed.

India’s Best Kept Financial Secret

Indian households own an estimated 28,000 tonnes of gold worth approximately ₹380 to ₹390 lakh crore at current prices.

More than the US Federal Reserve holds in its vaults. More than most countries have in their entire national reserves.

The gold sat in lockers. Came out for occasions. Passed from generation to generation, basically preserved, almost never monetised.

Organised lenders have monetised roughly 8% of that stock.
The race to reach the other 92%, that is what is driving the aggressive expansion in Indian retail credit right now.

This Is Not a New Idea. It Is a Very Old One.

Gold lending didn’t start with a banking app.
It started with the sahukar.

A farmer short of cash before harvest. A family dealing with a medical emergency. They took their jewellery to the neighbourhood moneylender who weighed it, agreed on a value, and handed over cash.

No salary slip, bank statement or credit history required.

The gold was the credit score.

Muthoot traces its gold lending to 1939. Manappuram to 1949 growing from a small moneylending business in Valapad, a fishing village in Kerala.

Both were doing exactly what the local sahukar had been doing for centuries. They just put a regulated process around it.

By 1994, RBI records show commercial banks were being given specific instructions for advances against gold jewellery for medical expenses and unforeseen needs. Muthoot became an RBI-regulated NBFC in 2001.

The transaction barely changed. The system around it did.

What Changed in 2025-26 to Make This Explode

Gold loans disbursed by NBFCs jumped roughly 70% year-on-year to reach ₹3.29 lakh crore as of May 2026. For scheduled commercial banks growth touched approximately 105%, taking the outstanding portfolio to ₹5.1 lakh crore. gold loan surge RBI News

Three things collided to create this moment.

Gold prices went through the roof.

The same jewellery supports a 60% larger loan than it did a year ago, without the borrower adding a single gram. Muthoot’s consolidated gold loan AUM rose from ₹1.07 lakh crore in FY25 to ₹1.65 lakh crore in FY26 up 54%. Manappuram’s core gold loan book reached ₹50,953 crore in Q4 FY26 up 99.1% year on year. gold loan market report

The loan books grew dramatically while the gold behind them actually decreased. Muthoot’s pledged gold fell from 216 tonnes to 209 tonnes. Less gold. Bigger loans. Simply because prices rose.

Unsecured lending got harder.

The RBI tightened regulations on personal loans. Risk weights went up. Banks became more cautious. Gold loans stepped directly into that gap.

The RBI standardised the rules.

From April 1 2026, a tiered loan-to-value structure with up to 85% LTV on smaller loans. For loans under ₹2.5 lakh, mandatory credit appraisal and income verification was removed entirely.

The process became faster, more transparent and accessible than ever.

Who Is Actually Taking Gold Loans in 2026?

The gold loan is no longer just for someone in a financial emergency.

Prime and above-prime customers, people with solid credit histories who could access other forms of credit accounted for 52% of gold loan originations in 2025. Up from 43% in 2022.

Average ticket sizes rose from ₹90,000 in 2022 to ₹1.96 lakh by end of 2025.
And repeat borrowers accounted for nearly 75% of new gold loan sourcing in Q4 FY26.

This is not emergency borrowing anymore.

The pattern looks more like a revolving credit line; pledge jewellery, get cash, repay, retrieve jewellery, pledge again when needed. For a small business owner that is working capital. For a household that is school fees, a medical bill, or a cash flow gap.

The jewellery box is starting to behave like a reusable line of credit.

The Risk Nobody Is Talking About

Gold loans have had extraordinarily low delinquencies so far, net 90-plus-day defaults at approximately 0.2% in March 2026.

The collateral helps but there is something else at work.

Borrowers have a powerful, personal reason to repay a gold loan that doesn’t exist for other credit products.

They want the jewellery back.

An auction is a recovery process for the lender. For the borrower, it can mean losing a wedding necklace or something inherited from a parent. That personal stakes make gold loan default unlike any other consumer credit product.

But the real risk sits in gold prices themselves.

A sharp fall in gold prices would quickly narrow the gap between the amount lent and the value of the collateral. The regulatory LTV caps exist precisely for this but rapid price movement is a stress the current benign environment has not yet tested.

FAQs

How does a gold loan work?

You pledge your gold jewellery to a bank or NBFC and receive cash, typically 75-85% of the gold’s current value. Once you repay the loan with interest, the jewellery is returned.

How much can I borrow against gold in 2026?

Under RBI’s April 2026 framework up to 85% of your gold’s value for loans under ₹2.5 lakh without income verification. For larger loans, LTV caps range from 75-85% depending on the lender and loan size.

Is a gold loan cheaper than a personal loan?

Usually yes. Gold loans start at 9-12% annually because they are secured. Personal loans typically range from 14-24%. The trade-off, you are pledging something irreplaceable.
