Samvat 2083: Nifty 50 historical returns, sector performance and key stock market trends.

The Nifty fell about 7% in Samvat 2082.

If you thought you were playing it safe in FMCG, you lost more than twice that. The sector investors call “defensive” fell 18.3%, while metals, PSU banks, and capital goods rose again.

Same market. Wildly different years.

As Samvat 2083 begins on Sunday, 8th November, that gap is the story worth telling.

In a hurry? Here are the takeaways:

  • The Nifty 50 is down about 7.3% in Samvat 2082, its worst Samvat in about 15 years.

  • More than half of the Nifty 500 stocks fell, and FMCG fell the most.

  • Sector leaders rotate. A few Samvats ago, IT and pharma led.

  • Over 18 Samvat years, every Nifty fall was followed by a gain, but recovery took patience.

The Big Picture: The Nifty in Every Samvat Year

A Samvat year runs from one Diwali to the next. To compare years, we take the Nifty 50’s last regular close before one Diwali and compare it with its last regular close before the next. These are price returns, so they exclude dividends, taxes and charges.

Samvat 2082 Scoreboard: Who Won and Who Lost?

So far in Samvat 2082, the Nifty 50 has slipped 7.3% and the Sensex 8.4%. But averages hide the damage underneath. Of the Nifty 500 stocks, 287, or 57%, had negative returns, and 140 of them fell by more than 20%.

Capital Goods, PSU Bank, Metal

Up about 6% to 22%

Capital goods, PSU bank, and metal indices have now been positive for six straight years. One brokerage note also found pharma and metals outperforming, and midcaps beating the Nifty 50.

Three things stand out:

  • “Safe” was not safe. The classic defensive sector had the worst year.

  • The winners were the usual suspects. Metals, PSU banks and capital goods kept rolling.

  • A 7% fall hid a lot of pain. More than half of stocks lost money.

Leaders Do Not Stay Leaders

Here is a reminder that sector fortunes turn. In Samvat 2076, the BSE Healthcare & BSE IT indices returned 53.7% and 48.2%, by far the best of any sector, while PSU stocks and banks were among the laggards.

Fast-forward to Samvat 2082: IT fell 9.2%, and PSU banks are among the leaders.

Yesterday’s hero is often today’s laggard, and the reverse. That is the best argument for not letting one sector or theme carry your whole portfolio.

What Went Wrong in Samvat 2082?

A lot, in a row. The Samvat began with high expectations for fiscal, and monetary support, but tariff worries came first and then West Asia tensions, which disrupted energy supplies and pushed up prices. The result was a sharp sell-off by foreign investors, driven by higher crude oil prices and rising US bond yields.

The Uncertainty Is Real

Samvat 2083 starts with a question mark, and analysts say so. They caution that the new Samvat will stay challenging unless crude prices cool off and bond yields ease. They also point to global macroeconomic pressures, geopolitical uncertainty and domestic growth challenges.

There are some supports. The Nifty’s P/E has cooled to around 19.3 to 19.4, and domestic inflows provide a floor. But the consensus is that this is a recovery phase, not a guaranteed bull run.

What Patience Has Looked Like

If history is any guide, patience has been rewarded, though not quickly:

  • Falls were followed by gains. The four down years (2064, 2067, 2071, 2078) were each followed by a gain: +103.7%, +9.5%, +11.0% and +10.5%.

  • A rebound is not a refund. After the 55.7% fall and the 103.7% rebound, the Nifty was still about 10% below where it started. Measured at each Diwali, it got above its 2007 level in 2010, fell below again in 2011 & 2012, and stayed above from 2013.

  • Time helped. Since its inception, the Nifty 50 Total Return Index has had no negative return over any rolling seven-year or ten-year period. Past returns are not a promise.

  • Investors kept investing. SIP inflows were consistently above ₹30,000 crore a month in early 2026.

The new Samvat should be about quality, patience and discipline.
