Will derivatives trading happen on 15th January 2026?
No. Since 15th January 2026 has been declared as an official trading holiday by NSE and BSE, all equity-related segments will remain closed for the day. This includes:
· Equity trading
· Equity derivatives (F&O)
· Currency derivatives
There will be no trading activity on NSE and BSE in these segments on account of the Local Body Elections in Mumbai.

Impact on Sensex expiry
January 15, 2026 was originally scheduled as a weekly expiry day for Sensex derivatives. With the trading holiday now confirmed, the weekly expiry is expected to be preponed to Wednesday, 14th January 2026.
Traders holding weekly positions should adjust their strategies accordingly.
Why is the stock market closed for BMC elections?
Mumbai is India’s financial capital and the BMC is Asia’s richest municipal corporation. On election day, the Maharashtra government declares a paid public holiday to encourage voter participation. Due to large-scale movement restrictions, staff deployment, and security arrangements, exchanges declare a special trading holiday.
Final takeaway
Both NSE and BSE have announced a trading holiday on 15th January 2026 due to the BMC and Local Body elections in Maharashtra. Equity markets will remain shut for the day, while MCX will resume trading from 5:00 PM. The Sensex weekly expiry has also been preponed to 14th January 2026.
Investors and traders are advised to rely only on official exchange circulars and plan their trading activity accordingly.
