The Election Commission of India gears up for a significant revelation – the awaited schedule for assembly polls in five states. At 12 noon, the Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar, will hold a press conference outlining the dates for the entire electoral process. This will include key dates such as when nominations can be filed, the specific polling days, and when the results will be declared.
Last Friday, the Election Commission gathered observers for an essential meeting. The goal? To strategise on effectively controlling the influence of money power during the election process. Participants included general, police, and expenditure observers allocated for Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Telangana. The commitment to a fair election was emphasized, with directives for the observers to ensure an even playing field and inducement-free elections.
Legislative assembly terms for Telangana, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh will be drawing to a close in January 2024. For Mizoram, the deadline is even sooner, with its Legislative Assembly term concluding on December 17 this year.
At present, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leads Telangana, BJP governs Madhya Pradesh, Congress has control in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, while Mizo National Front oversees the northeastern state.
These assembly elections, though centred on state politics, are expected to ripple into national consequences. With the 2024 Lok Sabha elections looming just around the corner, these state battles might be indicative of the larger political mood. Political parties are already on their toes, gearing up for high-stake contests in several constituencies.
