Nifty 50 Today & Sensex Today: Why Did Markets Fall Late?

Nifty 50 today settles near 24,056 after intraday high of 24,239; Sensex today ends up just 109 points as profit-booking erodes a 700-point rally

Indian benchmark indices closed higher for a second straight session on Thursday, June 25, 2026, but a sharp bout of profit-booking in the final hours of trade wiped out most of the day's gains. What had been a strong, broad-based rally through the morning and early afternoon — driven by falling crude oil prices — lost steam considerably by the closing bell, with the Nifty 50 today and Sensex today ending well off their day's highs.

Nifty 50 Today & Sensex Today — Closing Levels, June 25, 2026

As per provisional closing data, the S&P BSE Sensex added 109.25 points or 0.14% to settle at 77,100.47, while the Nifty 50 rose 34.35 points or 0.14% to close at 24,056.

The close, however, tells only part of the story. As of 12:00 PM, the Nifty 50 was up 217.95 points or 0.91% at 24,239.60, and the Sensex had risen 717.59 points or 0.93% to 77,708.81. From those midday highs, both indices saw a sharp reversal — the Nifty 50 today gave up nearly 184 points and the Sensex today shed close to 600 points before the closing bell, as late selling pressure took hold.

  • Sensex today: Closed at 77,100.47, with +109 points after touching an intraday high near 77,700+
  • Nifty 50 today: Settled at 24,056, down sharply from its intraday high of 24,239.60
  • Two-day gains: Over the last two trading sessions, the Sensex and Nifty advanced 1.18% and 0.97%, respectively
  • Sectoral mix: Metal, oil & gas, and IT shares declined while auto, FMCG, and realty shares advanced

Key Factors Behind Today's Volatile Session

1. Falling Crude Oil Drove the Morning Rally

Brent crude extended its decline on Thursday, driven by the resumption of tanker movement through the Strait of Hormuz following the US-Iran ceasefire accord. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said flows through the Strait were close to pre-war levels, with at least 20 million barrels having exited in the previous 24 hours. This fuelled strong early buying, particularly in auto and aviation stocks.

2. Sensex Weekly Expiry Triggered Late Volatility

A key — and often overlooked — factor behind the sharp pare-back into the close was the BSE Sensex weekly options expiry, which falls on Thursdays. Option sellers typically defend key strike levels in the final 60–75 minutes of trade, and this expiry-related positioning likely added to the late-session selling pressure that dragged the index down from its highs.

3. Profit-Booking After a Strong Run

With the Sensex and Nifty already up nearly 1% over the prior two sessions, traders appear to have used the morning's strength to book profits — a pattern consistent with the sharp reversal seen on Tuesday, June 23, when a similar rally was followed by a near-900-point Sensex fall.

4. Metal and IT Stocks Remained Under Pressure

Nifty Metal fell 0.79% to 12,518.95 as global commodity prices eased, while IT stocks was also on the weak side throughout the session, capping the overall index's performance even before the late selloff.

What Held Up — Auto and Realty Stocks

Despite the late reversal, pockets of strength remained intact by the close. Nifty Auto was the outperformer for the day, surging on the back of falling oil prices boosting the outlook for passenger and commercial vehicle demand, while Nifty Transportation and Logistics and Nifty Mobility also gained, benefiting from the same crude tailwind. InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo), Mahindra & Mahindra, and Maruti Suzuki were among the better performers through the session.

FII/DII Activity

Foreign Institutional Investors have sold Rs. 1,843.4 crore worth of stocks in the cash market as on date 24th June 2026 whereas Domestic Institutional Investors have bought Rs. 3,637.26 crore worth of shares in the same month. This is a trend where FII selling is offset by DII purchases in the month of June.

FAQs: Nifty 50 Today & Sensex Today — June 25, 2026

  1. What is the Nifty 50 closing today?

The Nifty 50 closed at 24,056, up 34.35 points or 0.14% — well off its intraday high of 24,239.60.

  1. What is the Sensex closing today?

The BSE Sensex settled at 77,100.47, up 109.25 points or 0.14%, after touching an intraday high above 77,700.

  1. Why did the market fall sharply in the last hour?

A combination of profit-booking after a strong two-session rally and Sensex weekly options expiry-related volatility in the final trading hour led to a sharp pare-back of earlier gains.

  1. Which sectors performed well today?

Auto, FMCG, and realty stocks led gains; metal, oil & gas, and IT shares were the key laggards.

Conclusion: Nifty 50 and Sensex Today Outlook

While the Nifty 50 and Sensex technically closed in the green for a second straight session, today's price action was far more cautious than the headline numbers suggest. A promising morning rally — powered by falling crude oil prices — was largely erased by aggressive profit-booking and expiry-related volatility into the close. With markets shut tomorrow for Muharram, the real test will come next week: whether buyers can hold onto recent gains or whether Thursday's sharp reversal is an early sign of renewed caution, especially with FIIs still net sellers in the cash segment.
