Balkrishna Industries gets mixed reviews from analysts after Q1 results

Tyre manufacturer Balkrishna Industries’ (BIL) reported Q1 results where the firm posted 9% revenue growth YoY (led by 7% volume growth) and 3% growth in net profits. One flag for investors in the results was the fall in EBITDA margins - this declined by 1% YoY, which management said was due to a rollback in price hikes the firm had implemented in April last year, and higher inventory costs. BIL's focus on the niche off roadway segment has seen some success. The company has been setting up a carbon black project that would add capacity and backward integrate its processes and access to this raw material at its Bhuj plant - this would be at a capex of Rs. 150 crore (the company is sitting on a net cash of Rs. 700 crore). The project is likely to commence in the next financial year, according to the firm. BIL has expanded its market share via discounts, selling its tyre product at a 20% discount compared to the market, thanks to lower labor costs. BIL's labor costs account for 6% of its revenue, compared to 20% for global competitors. The firm however, has seen limited price maneuverability, with rollbacks in price hikes. The firm has kept prices low to increase its market share. What may improve margins are however, lower rubber prices, and the management expects margins to stay steady at 30% in this FY. The company is looking at aggressive market expansion: BIL believes that the agri tire demand in Europe is seeing a recovery, with large economies coming out of the doldrums, and also sees construction and mining recovering soon. In the meantime the firm is also looking to expand into new markets such as Russia - however, US sanctions have limited the growth of construction sectors and the Russia economy may be further hit by new sanctions imposed on it by the US Congress. Overall, the take by analysts on the firm has been neutral to optimistic. HDFC Securities shrugs, saying optimism has been priced into the company's share price; while ICICI Securities issued a BUY.
