India's thermal power generation rises by 16% at 87,687 MU in November

India's thermal power generation registered a growth of 16.28 per cent at 87,687 MU (million units) in November this year as compared to 75,412 MU generated in the corresponding month of previous fiscal. The overall generation of power in the country also increased by 14.63 per cent from 1,02,968 MU to 1,18,029 MU in the reporting month year-on-year. Power utilities' despatch went up by 3.55 per cent to 62.34 million tonnes (MT) during November this year as compared to 60.20 MT in the year-ago month, the coal ministry said in a statement. Meanwhile, the country's total coal output went up by 11.66 per cent to 75.87 MT last month over 67.94 MT in November last fiscal. As per the latest figures of the coal ministry, Coal India Ltd (CIL) clocked a production growth of 12.82 per cent during November, whereas the output of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) and captive mines/others registered a growth of 7.84 per cent and 6.87 per cent, respectively. Given directions to Coal India to conclude wage pact: Pralhad Joshi

Coal minister Pralhad Joshi has given directions to Coal India to conclude the wage pact of its non-executive workforce at the earliest. The minister has said that all pending issues should be sorted out and emphasised that he would not allow the trade unions to go on strike on the issue. Wages of non-executive workers, who account for over 90 per cent of Coal India's (CIL) workforce, are revised every five years. Workers are seeking a 28 per cent increase in wages, while Coal India has offered a 10.5 per cent raise, according to a union leader. "Normally the agreement takes place between Coal India and labour unions... I have told management (of Coal India) to have a cordial relation with them and have a cordial meeting with them and sort out the issue. I want that whatever the issues are pending should be sorted out," Joshi told PTI. Coal India's production up 17% so far in FY23

Last month, Coal India produced 60.7 MT of coal, achieving 100% of the target and logging nearly 13% growth over 53.8 MT recorded in November last year. Sequentially, output rose 14.7% last month.

Govt offers Coal India flexibility to levy mine closure costs to consumers

Coal India Ltd (CIL) has been given freedom to pass mine closure costs on to consumers, but has not taken any such step yet, a company official said on Monday. The Maharatna PSU may consider "levying an additional fee on per tonne basis to be paid by the coal consumers to meet the cost of mine closure with the approval of the board and to provide funding for those subsidiaries which are not able to fund the closure of these mines", an official said quoting a Coal ministry notification. "Coal India has not taken any decision about levying such charges on coal sales as of now," the official said. The Kolkata-headquartered company has created a provision of Rs 7,238 crore as on March 2022 and incurred Rs 494 crore on mine closure during 2021-22, its annual report stated. The miner had produced 622 million tonnes of coal in 2021-22 and was pursuing a target of 700 million tonnes in the current fiscal.
