Hospitals burst at seams as Delhi shivers with fever

NEW DELHI: City hospitals are swamped with patients suffering from fever, most of them down with the mosquito-borne dengue. However, this monsoon, many others have been infected with a host of other viruses. Almost all of them are running high-grade fever that refuses to subside despite being prescribed paracetamol, doctors say. The medics have also been been spotting "cross infections" in many cases. "I recently came across a patient who had dengue and typhoid at the same time," Dr Atul Gogia, senior consultant at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, says. Similarly, Dr Suranjit Chatterjee of Apollo hospital has come across many patients who have been hospitalised following loss of consciousness, unrelenting fever and vomiting, but have tested negative for dengue and chikungunya. As a result, hospitals are at wit's ends on how to accommodate the additional rush of patients. Safdarjung Hospital has shifted many such patients to its psychiatry ward. At Sir Ganga Ram and Apollo hospitals, additional beds have been earmarked. Max hospital in Saket has turned its patients' lounge into wards to cater to those requiring short admission for emergency care, sources say. AIIMS, Lok Nayak and Hindu Rao hospitals are also flooded with patients down with high-grade fever. Elderly and children are worst hit. Though not all of them require admission, there's a lot of panic and relatives of these patients insist on admission, a senior doctor at Lok Nayak hospital said.
