KOLKATA: Soon, you won't have to worry about the purity of the gold jewellery you buy. Nearly 100 more hallmarking centres have submitted applications to Bureau of Indian Standards, which when approved, will take the total number of hallmarking centres in the country to 475, adequate to handle the 900 tonnes of gold jewellery sold annually in the country. In 2015-16, about 370 lakh jewellery pieces weighing 500 tonnes were hallmarked at the 375 BIS-recognised hallmarking centres in the country. Talking to ET, Harshad Ajmera, president, Indian Association of Hallmarking Centres (IAHC) said, "BIS Act, 2016 has been passed by Parliament. We are now waiting for BIS to direct all jewellers to comply with hallmarking. We think that by Diwali BIS will make this compulsory. So, we are getting ready with the hallmarking infrastructure." BIS Act, 2016, has provisions for simpler self-certification mechanism, mandatory hallmarking, product recall and product liability for better consumer protection. According to the new Act, every piece of jewellery sold in the country shall carry the 5 BIS hallmark logos. James Jose, vice-president, IAHC said he expected that BIS will give a go ahead to all the new applications for hallmarking centres by December 31, 2016.Limited Review Report for June 30, 2016
