Concerns over bad loans outside bank's 'watch list'

Axis Bank: In the shadow of bad loans

Even before Axis Bank's Q1 results, analysts have not been upbeat, with recent calls being largely sell or neutral. In the beleagured banking sector, there are few stocks with strong CASA ratios, whose NPAs/GNPAs have been falling (this screener shows the relatively healthy bank stocks). Axis Bank in particular is a once-star whose worsening fundamentals have had many investors worried. The bank reported a 16% year-on-year fall in its net profit for its Q1, and a low 2% growth in core income. it has seen slippages not predicted by its watchlist - a worrying indicator, implying that the bank itself doesn't truly know how bad the bad loans situation is going to get. Its exposure to sectors such as power may result in more slippages in the future. Axis also wrote off Rs 2,462 crore worth of loans in the quarter, more than 2x of last quarter. The RBI has also pulled up Axis Bank for divergences in its disclosures on bad loans - the Central bank calculated Axis' bad loan stock at Rs. 15,566 crore, far higher than the Rs. 9,478 crore the lender had reported in March 2016.
