Then came the helicopters and gun-toting civilians poured onto the streets. Walia, who hails from Jamshedpur and now settled in Germany, was on a business trip to Turkey. Before internet connections snapped, Walia narrated to TOI's Raja Bose a harrowing tale through intermittent whatsapp messages. It was around 11.30 pm (time in Istanbul) and I was gorging on street food with a few business associates in central Istanbul. Suddenly, there was commotion all around us. We found everyone peering into their phone handsets, trying to figure out what happened and receiving calls. Then, sirens began to blare all around me. Many left their food midway and left. Some stood in concentrated groups, immersed in animated discussion. Suddenly, helicopters began hovering over us and they were flying quite low. It was then that we got to know that there was a military coup in the country. It sounded so disturbing. The furtive glances people exchanged was so unnerving. My business associates in Istanbul said I would be safer if I were with them than in my hotel. They took me to their office, which was just 30 minutes away but took us more than an hour to reach. The streets were choc-a-bloc with traffic, with people rushing to head back home in panic. We were scared and concerned.
