Sun TV gains as it undergoes a programming revamp

Sun TV has been gaining steadily with its share price now close to its 52 week high. The company came off decent Q3 results - although ad revenues shrank with demonetization, subscription revenues gained in double digits YoY. Operationally, the company has been aggressively pursuing market share in South Indian markets outside Tamil Nadu. Sun TV: hoping for market dominance with a programming revamp Earlier this month, Sun TV shut down four advertising-free action movie channels, and introduced five new channels in Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada. The company had previously introduced a slew of new shows targeting different demographics in the first quarter of FY17, which helped its ratings move up in the Telugu and Malayalam markets. With the new channels, the company is looking to consolidate its hold. Higher ratings have helped it with ad revenues - in the Telugu market its ad rates were up 30% in the most recent quarter. Sun TV has also been expanding its radio and FM presence. Sun subsidiaries Kal Radio and South Asia FM and the Entertainment Network (India) Ltd. emerged as the top spenders in the FM radio auctions held by the government end February. Kal Radio and South Asia FM together won 13 radio frequencies of the 66 auctioned, for an estimated Rs 80 crore (total bids at the auction amounted to Rs. 200 crore). The frequencies SUN TV won included Hyderabad - as the Telugu market has emerged as a growth focus - Dehradun and towns such as Agartala, Leh, and Jhansi. Valuation shifts as case against Marans dropped The shadow of corruption and money laundering charges that hung over the Maran brothers in the Aircel Maxis case are gone after the charges were dropped by the Special 2G court. The criminal charges meant that investors, worried about conviction, had put a substantial valuation discount on Sun TV compared to its competitor Zee Entertainment, despite Sun's stronger returns. This discount has narrowed since the court ruling, but analysts such as ICICI Securities believes there is more fizz left in the champagne, and that the share price for Sun TV can gain further. ICICI Securities maintained a BUY on the stock in the report issued mid-Feb, with a target of Rs 850 for its share price.
